Type talkIf you love type and typography, you'll find some of these worth reading (and bookmarking!): 100 best typefaces of all time. Published by FontShop Germany, there can be little argument about most of the fonts on this Top 100 list. The exact order, though, leaves plenty of room for debate. Avenir down at 65 and Trajan further down at 77? Seriously? Helvetica, anyone? If you took a look at the list above, you'll have found Helvetica sitting at number one. And if you feel the need to question that, here's a list of 40 logos created with Helvetica that you might recognize. Kern, kern, kern. Proper kerning (adjusting the space between characters) can make a big difference to how visually appealing type looks when it is set. And if you think it isn't important, may we introduce you to Max Kerning, the nerdy, slightly rude Mr Blackwell of type? What's That Font 1. Even if you know your fonts, there are times when you just can't put a name to the typeface you're looking for. Arguably the most hated typeface in history, the movement against Microsoft's Comic Sans refuses to die down. Thankfully, there are several resources for free (and legally downloadable) fonts, possibly the best of them being Dafont, but FontSquirrel and AbstractFonts are also well worth a visit. |
